Activities done by No. 6 (North Shore City) Sqn ATC are:
Tramping.
Through out the year
there are various tramps completed by the Squadron.
There is an introductory tramp for the first year
cadets in the second term. This introduces tramping
techniques, equipment required and safety in the
bush.
The second
and third year cadets are challenged by
longer tramps in various terrain. In the
first term they complete a 6-8 hour tramp.
Second term tramp at Mt Tongariro, and in
the third term a river crossing safety education
tramp. |

Gliding:
No.
6 Squadron is an active Squadron with plenty of
gliding booked regularily. The Squadron
uses the Whenuapei Gliding Club and their gliders..
This gives ALL our cadets the opportunity to go
gliding at a reasonable cost well below commercial
rates. This is hands on with a qualified instructor.
There
are also Area courses that can be completed through
Cadet Forces. Cadets partake in a weeklong intensive
course, with the opportunity for solo flights
once training is completed. Qualified instructors
do all the training. There are costs relating
to the flying involved in this course. The Squadron
does have scholarships that may be awarded.
Power Flying:
Another National Course
that cadets can apply for is the Power Flying
Course. This is an intensive 14-day course that
cadets will train to fly in civilian aircraft.
There is the opportunity to go solo once the training
and medical criteria have been met. This course
is subsidised by the NZ Airforce and ATC Association
of NZ. The Squadron does have a scholarship that
may be awarded.
Target
Shooting:
After
the Cadets have completed their Firearm Safety
lessons and test, they are able to participate
in the Squadrons regular Target Shooting. The
Squadron uses .22 rifles on a range with a qualified
RSO (Range Safety Officer). The squadron competes
against other ATC units in Auckland and throughout
the country with an excellent record. 6 Squadron
have won the Eden Roskil Shooting competition
for '02 and '03 and 2nd place in 2004. In 2005
and 2006 we won the shooting competition and had
the top shot.
First Aid and Bushcraft:
The squadron
recognises and supports the cadets in first
aid and bushcraft education. Training is
completed on Monday night's and is put in
to practice in exercises held on our camps.
The officers in the unit are first aid qualified
and have completed Risk Management Courses. |
 |
Leadership Training:
As a cadet in the
unit, you will complete a three-year training
programme with the aim to promote you to a Junior
Leader (Rank of Corporal). Throughout the training
there will be camps and courses that train you
to be able to instruct and lead others. This covers
leadership, drill instructor, bush travel, code
of behaviour, and Risk Management to name a few.
Drill:
Being able to participate
in Parades every Monday night is part of
being in the Air Training Corps. Not only
does this improve self-discipline, but also
creates pride in being part of the organisation.
The squadron plays an active role in ANZAC
Day Parades at East Coast Bays RSA (including
Cenotaph Drill), and Battle of Britain Parades.
The squadron parades with SLR Drill rifles. |

Inter-squadron and other activities:
 |
The six
Auckland ATC Squadrons compete in various
sports days and competitions. These events
are a great opportunity to meet other cadets
while having fun. 6 Squadron does very well
at these events. There are other activities
that we organise as team day activities.
Rock climbing, Waiwera pools, paintball,
and visiting other units – like the
Sea Cadet Corp. |
